How we started

IT Transport can trace its history back to 1966, when the Intermediate Technology Development Group (ITDG) was founded by Economist E.F. Schumacher, based on the principle of bottom-up solutions to practical problems faced by developing countries. Most famous for his seminal book, Small Is Beautiful: A Study of Economics as if People Mattered, part of Schumacher’s philosophy was based on the belief that there should be a move away from top-down policy-led interventions to towards an emphasis on 'intermediate technologies' based on the needs and skills possessed by the people of developing countries, and on the facilitation of self-help, rather than aid.

As ITDG continued to grow, an expansion phase followed and three private companies were formed to undertake consulting work, including Intermediate Technology Transport, in 1979. During the next 35 years, our philosophy of building capacity and developing solutions in a practical, pragmatic and unbiased manner changed little, and we have gone on to complete hundreds of assignments, in many parts of the world.

In 2014, we decided the time was right to begin our next expansion phase and that finding a larger partner was the best way to achieve this. This is when we joined the Emerging Markets Division of professional infrastructure and environmental services company, Cardno.  At the beginning of 2016, we moved down the road from our long-standing premises of The Old Power Station in Ardington, Oxfordshire into modern offices in Thame, Oxfordshire with our sister company, Cardno Emerging Markets UK.

As an organisation, our philosophy has still not changed and our passion for the work we do is as strong as ever. This is evidenced in the fact that some of our team have been with us for more than 30 years, which provides continuity as we continue to expand and bring new talent to the team. We are looking forward to the next 35 years of our history, by which time it will no doubt be time to start our next expansion phase!
