Our Company’s History
New ITT Logo
A little over a year since the buyout, we felt the time was right to redevelop the ITT brand to reflect the work we do, and the way the world has changed since our previous strapline was developed more than 30 years ago. Although the changes we are making mean ITT’s logo is as recognisable as ever, we have updated the strapline to become “Sustainable Transport Infrastructure Solutions”, and changed the logo colour to a dark shade of green. At the start of 2021, a Management Buyout of Cardno IT Transport was completed and we began operating back as I.T. Transport Limited, as we were for most of our life since 1979.
Cardno’s Improving Rural Access Tanzania (IRAT) project, which ITT’s Dick Komakech was the Team Leader for, was awarded the Best International Development: Physical Project at the British Expertise International Awards 2019.
In October 2019, three ITT staff members along with some of our Cardno colleagues climbed the highest mountain in Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro, raising money for Tommy’s.
ITT hit a major milestone in late 2019, celebrating 40 years of successfully providing consultancy services in transportation and infrastructure development.
In September 2019, ITT organised a conference in Nairobi with the aim of showcasing progress and generating discussion in the areas of Trade Facilitation, Road Safety, Gender Mainstreaming and Innovations in Asset Management. The event was opened by Eng. James M. Kungu, the Chief Roads Engineer of Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development (MoTIHUD) and was a huge success with over 140 people attending.
In 2014, we decided the time was right to begin our next expansion phase and that finding a larger partner was the best way to achieve this. This is when we joined the International Development Division of professional infrastructure and environmental services company, Cardno, and continued working under the name Cardno IT Transport.
ITT’s Roads 2000 Nyanza Maintenance Programme in Kenya was Highly Commended in the Development Project of the Year category at the British Expertise International Awards 2011.
ITT’s Support to Rural Feeder Roads: Management Support Team project in Ghana received a British Expertise Award as the best Poverty Alleviation Project for 2007.
In May 1990, Intermediate Technology Transport Limited, officially changed its name to I.T. Transport Limited.
ITT were awarded the Appropriate Technology Award at the Better Environment Awards for Industry 1989. The award was presented for ITT’s Production of Low-cost Wheels in Developing Countries.
As ITDG continued to grow, an expansion phase followed and three private companies were formed to undertake consulting work, including Intermediate Technology Transport, in November 1979.
IT Transport can trace its history back to 1966, when the Intermediate Technology Development Group (ITDG) was founded by Economist E.F. Schumacher, based on the principle of bottom-up solutions to practical problems faced by developing countries. Most famous for his seminal book, Small Is Beautiful: A Study of Economics as if People Mattered, part of Schumacher’s philosophy was based on the belief that there should be a move away from top-down policy-led interventions to towards an emphasis on ‘intermediate technologies’ based on the needs and skills possessed by the people of developing countries, and on the facilitation of self-help, rather than aid.
